Slavery was not new to America when the Africans were brought to North America. The type of slavery that the Africans endured was new - it was brutal, degrading and intended to be permanent. For this reason, many Africans made the decision to run away. They decided that it was better to die while running away than to die from being beat down while living in slavery.
As young African Americans and people of other ethnic groups, you have the opportunity to 'break the chains of slavery' that exist today. The slavery that exists today is a slavery that supports negative thinking about African Americans and other people of color. This type of slavery makes it difficult for people to get a good education and a job. As African Americans ourselves, we -- Drs. Copeland, Harmon and Jones -- want viewers and participants of our webquest to know that African Americans as a people have endured much and yet have paved the way for many others to move forward. We encourge each of you to use your education to 'break the chains of slavery.' Knowledge is something that can not be taken away from you; rather it can take you to many opportunities in life that you might not otherwise have.
